‘Broken’ Dog Has The Biggest Smile On His Face When He Realizes He’s Being Rescued

Sanford was once described as a “broken dog” with sad smiles until he met his foster mom, Karen Velazquez, who helped him and gave him a chance to live. The poor dog couldn’t stop smiling when he realized that he was rescued and safe.

Animal control saved him in April after he was hit by a car, which left him unable to walk. The officer also found a gunshot wound in his right back leg. They quickly brought him to a small municipal shelter in Dallas, Texas. Unfortunately, the shelter lacked resources, so Sanford didn’t receive the medical care that he needed during that time. He was physically and mentally broken.

Thankfully, a volunteer of Dallas DogRRR, a local dog rescue group, saved Sanford from the shelter. But the biggest change happened when Sanford was placed into Velazquez’s care.

“He was physically broken … and when the volunteer went to see him, he didn’t really make any effort to come and say hello,” Kerry Anechiarico, executive director of Dallas DogRRR, told The Dodo. “It’s almost like he had given up, and he was just waiting for his time to come.”

“I am presently on my 52nd foster, and I can genuinely say that I’ve never had anyone as jovial as him,” Velazquez told The Dodo.“He looks at me in a way that no other animal or human has ever looked at me, including my own pets. Essentially, the only time he is not smiling is when he is asleep or eating.”

Sanford has been all smiles ever since he moved into Velazquez’s house. He seemed to know that he was in a safe place with kind people. Sanford is very happy in his foster home and is waiting patiently for someone who will love him and adopt him.

“He’ll be a great family dog,” Anechiarico said. “He’ll get along with other dogs and all humans. He even does well with kids.”

“He’s the perfect companion dog that you can come home to,” Anechiarico added. “He’ll wag his tail and greet you, and he’ll just keep you company for the rest of the day. He’s just a happy-go-lucky dog now.”

Despite everything that happened, he is still sweet and gentle. Now, he has the biggest smile on his face all the time and a loving foster house where he is loved and cared. We hope that Sanford will be adopted soon and find his forever home that he deserves.
