Meet Painted Spurfowl, A Spectacular Multi-Colored Bird That You Can’t Keep Your Eyes Off

There are many breathtaking birds that were born with one-of-its-kind plumage. This coat makes them stand out from the crowd, even in the dark. Some are too perfect to be real. Some people think that such spectacular birds can only jump out from fairy books. But they do exist in nature.

The painted spurfowl is one of these striking birds. They put on a charismatic multi-colored coat from emerald green to chestnut and russet brown. Noticeably, there are black and white spots beautifully flecked all over its body, making these creatures more conspicuous.

Like many other bird species, male and female painted spurfowls have distinctive features. The female wears a duller coat with a rufous brow and ear coverts. These birds also lack white spots on the body.

The unique painted spurfowl is a member of the pheasant family.

It’s known for its special harsh. When this spurfowl is flushed, it cackles “kuk-kuk-kuk-kukaak.”

They distribute in some parts of the Aravalli ranges in Rajasthan, the hills of central India, and the rocky hills and dry forested areas of southern India. These birds can also be found in the Nallmalai region in the Andra Pradesh Eastern Ghats.

They inhabit rocky hills with scrub-covered slopes.

This spurfowl’s main diets are berries, insects, and flowers.

During the breeding season (from January to August), the female painted spurfowl builds her nest in a shallow scrape on the ground. This nest is lined with leaves to make it softer and warmer.

Female birds then lay 3-5 eggs in their nest and incubate them. Male birds will join the females in feeding and taking care of the hatchlings until fully fledged.
