Stunning Plumage Of Yellow and White Flecked With Densely Black, Speckled Tanagers Stand Out In The World Of Birds

The speckled tanager is such a charismatic bird. It wears a “one-of-its-kind” coat in the world of birds. Its wings and back (upperparts) are luscious lime green while the underparts are white. However, these are cleverly flecked with black spots, making this bird conspicuous whenever it is.

These beautiful creatures have a stunning tail. It’s black, edged with green. The black line from the eye to the gape also makes these birds more eye-catching.

There are some details to recognize male and female speckled tanager.

The female’s breast has fewer black markings than male birds. And, the green borders are wider on the upper parts. These are not as defined as those of male birds.

Speckled tanager is a medium-sized passerine bird. It distributes in Costa Rica, Panama, Trinidad, Colombia, Guyana, Venezuela, and Suriname as well as the north of Brazil.

These bird’s main diet is fruits. But they also eat nectar, seeds, and insects.

When it’s time for breeding, female speckled tanagers will build their nest in trees. This nest is small and in the shape of a cup. They then lay their eggs in and incubate them for around 13-14 days. Female birds will feed the chicks for 14-18 days, until they’re fully-fledged.

Currently, the population of the speckled tanager is quite stable.
