Chen Xiaotian was a brave boy who sacrificed his life to save his mother’s life and two other lives by donating his organs. The little boy had a malignant tumor in his brain when he was just five years old. Despite being too young, he refused to give up and bravely fought against the cancer.
When Chen’s cancer was discovered, his mother Zhou Lu was diagnosed to contract kidney disease. Zhou needed dialysis treatment, while her son required round-the-clock care. However, the pair battled through their debilitating illnesses together for two years. Sadly, Chen couldn’t win this battle. He went blind and became so weak he was bed-ridden, nearly paralyzed.
Although the little boy couldn’t survive, the doctors said he could save his mother’s life by giving her his kidney. They tried to talk to his grandmother Lu Yuanxiu about it. She discussed it with Zhou, but the mother refused point-blank and didn’t want to hear anything.
“The doctors approached me rather than his mother because of the sensitive nature of the issue. They told me that my grandson would not survive but his kidneys could help his mother and also save two other lives as well. I discussed it with Zhou and she refused point-blank, she absolutely didn’t want to hear any talk of that happening,” the grandmother said.
However, the young boy overheard the talk and pleaded with his mother let him save her. In tears, his mother agreed. When Chen drew his last breath, he was quickly moved to the operating room to remove his kidneys and liver. They were then donated to his mother and two other people, a 21-year-old girl and a 27-year-old man.
Hospital spokesman Yi Tai said all three transplants were successful, and Chen’ sacrifice helped three others to survive and live normal lives. He said: “The medical team held a brief moment of prayer and silence for the poor child before the transplant, I think it’s fair to say there were very few dry eyes.”
Zhou was distraught after her operation, but her only consolation was to know that a part of him would always be with her.
