Herman, found in a parking lot, was a survivor of a virus called PMV (Paramyxovirus). The pigeon suffered from a head tilt, didn’t eat, and nearly came to the end of his life. Thanks to the help of doctors, Herman was saved, but he lost his ability to fly.

Lundy, a dog having spinal cord damage, couldn’t run or use his back end. While Lundy grew up with other dogs, he knew he was different from his friends. He was diagnosed with a condition called kyphosis, in which there is no surgery to fix. The disease also affected his lung, causing preparatory issues.

Sue Rogers, who fostered Herman and Lundy, shared with GMA News a heartbreaking story of their friendship. The two unfortunate souls first met each other on Herman’s bed. It seemed like they both understood they were different, so they became attached to each other. Lundy started licking Herman. While other birds would peck or smack the dog with their wings, Herman did nothing but accepted the friend request from Lundy. It was just so cute!

Sue often saw Herman feed Lundy as if the dog were a baby bird. The two curled up and usually fell asleep in the same bed. Lundy also introduced Herman to his friends, but none of them seemed to have a special connection with the bird as Lundy did. Those two bonded souls were mutual friends of each other.

While Herman’s health gradually improved, his best friend didn’t get any good news about his condition. Lundy started breathing with difficulties, getting tired and weak. He went to heaven on a peaceful morning when mom Sue went to check him in his bed. The angel had a forever sleep next to Herman’s enclosure. To help Herman get over the loss of his friend, Sue gave him a lot of attention in the next two days. She knew he was so sad, but the pigeon needed to understand the truth.

A few days after, the family welcomed some newborn baby pups. They were taken to the pigeon one by one, but Herman found no special feelings with them at all. There was no friendship like that of Herman and Lundy. The bird is now having a healthy life with his mom and animal friends. The story of these animals teaches us many lessons. Who can even imagine a dog and a pigeon would become friends and bring comfort to each other? But they did. Love is not something that we can choose a person to give it. Love comes from all shapes and sizes.
