New Young Male Pronghorn Joins In The Herd At Topeka Zoo

The Topeka Zoo is a medium-sized zoo in Topeka, Kansas in the United States. Although it only expands 32 ha in total area, it is the home for over 250 animals. The first indoor tropical rainforest in the US also belongs to this zoo. In Topeka, the Topeka Zoo is clearly a famous tourist attraction with an astonishing number of 200,000 visitors come here every year.

Recently, Topeka zoo has welcomed the newest member of the pronghorn family, a two-year-old male.

The two-year-old male, Reed, came from the Detroit Zoo, he quickly befriended other members of his new herd. And one thing for sure, he instantly drew all the attention from the staff here.

Reed is currently sharing his home with Sage, Senna and Sassafras. Hope that they will get along well with each other.

“Reed is settling in nicely. He is already becoming a staff favorite and will be sure to be loved by our guests also,” said Brendan Wiley, the Zoos Director.

The pronghorn is native to North America. They can be found throughout the treeless deserts, plains and basins of western North America and in the northern part of Mexico. Although pronghorns are not related to antelopes, they’re usually called American antelopes or simply antelopes because they two look quite similar.

Pronghorns got their name derived from their unique horns, shaped like a lyre, curving in towards each other. They are the only animals that have branched horns, not antlers, and shed their horns every year.

These creatures are amongst the fastest animals on earth. They can accelerate up to 96 km/h casually when needed. Moreover, they also possess excellent eyesight, their field of vision can be as wide as 320 degrees.
