Wolverines Are Recruited To Work As Rescue Animals To Save Skiers Caught In Avalanches

You may find rescue dogs living or working around you. These animals are smart, brave, and affectionate, so they can always perform excellently at work. They are among the most perfect companions that you can find.

Do you know that wolverines are also chosen to do this job? They are currently being trained to save skiers who are caught in avalanches.

Steve Kroschel, an Alaskan wildlife photographer, is the founder of this one-of-a-kind pilot project. It has been launched in the hope that wolverines can rescue avalanche survivors.

Wolverines have long been known as blood-thirsty beasts with long claws and razor-sharp teeth. Obviously, they are not ideal candidates for mountain rescues.

However, this species has extra born advantages. They have a high level of intelligence and a powerful sense of smell. These instincts fit that work perfectly.

“It’s just like training dogs, but wolverines are so much more intelligent than a dog,” Kroschel said.

You can watch the video of their training below.

Kroschel started his project decades ago. He just wanted to convince people that these blood-thirsty beasts could help with the mountain rescues.

“Wolverines are so smart that within, I would say, a week, you could train them to do this, to find a human scent,” Kroschel added.

He also said that wolverines were easily tamed and stayed gentle to you.

“They just really become a companion like no other wild animal that I’ve ever worked with,” Kroschel said. “You can train them to a harness very easily, they love that. And when they’re bonded with you, they will follow you around in the mountains like a dog.
