An occupational therapist from New Orleans named Sonya Karimi built a DIY stairlift to help her three elderly rescue dogs climb the stairs easier.
Sonya came up with the idea to build this mini wooden stairlift two months ago when she adopted Bodhi, a 10-year-old dog who had a torn knee ligament. That made climbing up and down the stairs difficult and nearly impossible.
Bodhi lives with Sonya, as well as several other dogs including 13-year-old George, 10-year-old Sam, and 4-year-old Emery. Thanks to the doggy elevator, the three elderly dogs can now travel in style and comfort at their beloved home.
Sonya shared some videos of her creation on social media and they quickly went viral. Many people thought that this stairlift is absolutely adorable. Here is the video Sonya uploaded on her Instagram page.
“At work, I’ve seen how helpful stairlifts are to people so I was surprised there wasn’t anything similar for dogs with all the different products that are available for pets nowadays. So I thought that we might be able to create something ourselves for our dogs to use” Sonya told Daily Mail.
After a lot of planning and buying the necessary supplies, she went to build the wooden lift with the help of her fiance Zach and his parents. It took around 3 months for Sonya to build it, but she was so happy as the result was amazing.
“They’ve adapted to it so quickly, I thought I’d have to train them for a while to get used to it but they just get on it as if they’ve had it for years! The two older pugs love it especially – they won’t use the stairs, they will sit there and wait until the ride is ready for them and it’s so cute,” Sonya said.
