Edinburgh Zoo Welcomes Arrival Of Endangered Pygmy Hippo Calf

Pygmy hippos is currently listed an endangered species. Native to West Africa, the population of Pygmy hippos has dramatically decreased due to habitat loss and poaching for bushmeat. That’s why the birth of any baby pygmy hippo is worth celebrating.

And recently, Edinburgh zoo has welcomed the arrival of an endangered pygmy hippo calf. It is such a great news! The arrival of the newborn contributes greatly to the conservation of this species.

The calf was born last month proud parents Otto and Gloria. She weighed only 11lb 14oz (5.4kg).

Jonny Appleyard, the zoo’s hoofstock team leader said that the newborn is doing really well. She is growing stronger and more confident every day.

You may drop by the zoo to see the pygmy hippo calf. However, the zoo is currently limiting the opening hours and numbers of visitors.

The newborn is still quite young. They want to give it private space and some time to get used to visitors.

“The first 30 days are critical for her development, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on them both at this sensitive time and plan to name her in the coming weeks,” Appleyard said.
