Grandfathers and grandmothers always have a special place in our hearts. They see us grow and witness milestones in our life. I used to get hooked into my grandfather’s bedtime stories when I was small. He was always keen to me and my cousins even when we committed “petty” crimes or fight over. I do believe that all granddaughters wish to be walked down the aisle by their grandfathers. This probably the most memorable moments in our life.
This story is a very heart-warming one. A 94-year-old respectful grandfather, a WWII war hero fulfilled his promise to granddaughter: walked her down the aisle before he passed away. Although the grandfather was suffering his ailments and complications during his last days, he still finished his mission.
The moment Bronislaw ‘Grom’ Karwowski (name of the grandfather) walked the altar with his granddaughter, Joanna, every people at the wedding shed a happy tear. It was solemn yet heartwarming.
Wedding is without dispute the most important event of one’s life. Their family and friends gather to witness their journey to married life. But this time, Joanna’s wedding became more touching. Her grandfather was tired but he kept escorting her while holding her arm. Nothing could prevent him from fulfilling his promise to his granddaughter.
When Grom and his granddaughter reached the altar, the groom was overwhelmed with joy. He couldn’t hold his tears any longer. To show his respect to the grandfather, he kissed him on the cheek. He was extremely thankful for what Groom had done for them.
However, the pair and their big family faced sad news two days later. Their respectful grandfather passed away in his home in Bialystok, Northern Poland. Even though they had all prepared for his departure, they still missed and loved him. They believe that he will always look down on them from heaven.
Following Grom’s departure, the Narodowe Sily Zbrojne (National Armed Forces) shared their sentiments on social media.
It reads:
“We regret to announce that today, on 1st September 2018, on the 79th anniversary of Germany’s assault on Poland, the national hero and insurgent of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, Major Bronislaw Karwowski retired to the eternal guard.
He was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Poland, the Silver Cross of Merit with Swords, the Cross of the National Armed Deed and many others.”
Bronislaw Karwowski served in World War II. He was captured by Nazis and escaped from the Gestapo’s headquarters. In 1948, however, was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
After his release, Karwowski was given the Knight’s Cross Order of the Rebirth of Poland. The free man then started a new life with his own family. Years passed, Karwowski and his wife became grandparents and found happiness in taking care of their grandchildren.
